Grant Biomass Wood Pellet and Solar Thermal Heating Installation

We were approached by a local builder to replace an old oil boiler, to provide biomass wood pellet and solar thermal heating and hot water for his renovated, detached house.

Following a consultation period, during which we assessed the various options with the client, they decided that their best option would be for us to install a biomass wood pellet and solar thermal heating system, consisting of a 26kW Grant Spira wood pellet boiler, in a purpose built, adjoining boiler room, complete with a 300 litre, twin coil hot water cylinder. This would be coupled to an array of Grant “in roof” Solar Thermal Panels on the roof.

As a domestic installation, the client will benefit from the Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (DRHI) for 7 years, based on their deemed energy requirement, as laid out on their Energy Performance Certificate (EPC). The combination of a wood pellet boiler and solar thermal panels provides a very cost effective domestic heating and hot water solution and minimises fuel costs and running costs, with the solar thermal panels providing almost all of their hot water through the summer months..

We are currently in further consultation with this customer, regarding the installation of an air source heat pump at a new build property they are developing. Whereas a biomass wood pellet and solar thermal heating system is ideal for a renovated property, or an “off grid” property with lower levels of insulation, heat pumps, whether ground source or air source, are ideal for well insulated or new build properties.
