District Heating
Where two or more properties require heating, for example in a building development or block of flats, instead of heating each one individually, a more cost-effective option may be to provide a District Heating Scheme.
District heating can utilise a number of different technologies, depending on the situation, including Ground Source Heat Pumps, Combined Heat, and Power (CHP), Commercial Wood Chip Biomass, or Natural Gas Boilers.

District Heating in Flats or Apartments
District Heating offers a number of advantages over installing individual heating systems. For example, in blocks of flats or apartments, installing individual gas boilers in each flat means running gas supplies to each property.
In addition, each boiler will also need a flue, meaning the boiler will have to be installed on an outside wall and away from opening windows in order to comply with building regulations.
District heating systems use Boilers (Biomass, such as Woodchip, or Gas or Oil) or Heat Pumps (Ground Source or Air Source) that are located remotely to the flats, in a central boiler house or plant room.
The hot water produced from the plant room is piped, in insulated pipework, to a Heat Interface Unit [HIU] in each property. The HIU acts like a Combination Boiler. It is fitted with heat exchangers that transfer heat into the property for space heating or Domestic Hot Water and can be fitted with a metering system that allows the property to be invoiced for the heat they use.
